You Were in an Accident. You've Been to Treatment. You're Still Not Better.
Most MVA patients who walk into MSKrehab aren't fresh off an accident. They're six months in. They've tried chiropractic, massage, osteopathy, or generic physiotherapy. They got temporary relief at best. And they still can't sleep through the night, still tense up every time they drive, and still don't have a clear answer for why they aren't recovering.
If that's you, you're not failing rehab. Your rehab has been failing you.
What Most Clinics Get Wrong After a Car Accident
The standard approach to MVA rehabilitation leans heavily on passive treatment — ultrasound, heat, TENS, generic exercise handouts, repeated massage, or excessive needling without a clear clinical rationale. These treatments aren't necessarily harmful. But they address symptoms without addressing the underlying reason those symptoms exist.
The bigger gap is education. Most patients leave their appointments without understanding:
-
What actually happened to their body in the collision
-
Why whiplash injuries follow a specific natural history — and what that trajectory looks like for them specifically
-
How pain science explains why their nervous system is still amplifying signals long after tissue healing should have occurred
-
What outcome measures actually tell us about where they are in recovery and where they're headed
Without this foundation, patients repeat the same passive treatment cycle indefinitely, never building the capacity to actually recover.
What We Find That Others Miss
The most common finding in MVA second-opinion assessments at MSKrehab is deconditioning of the deep cervical musculature — specifically, patients who have lost the ability to properly activate and sustain the muscles responsible for supporting their own head.
This isn't laziness or poor effort. After a whiplash mechanism, chronic nerve irritation causes muscle shortening and inhibition that conventional assessment often misses entirely. The result is a patient whose neck is functionally unsupported, whose symptoms persist or worsen with any sustained posture or activity, and who has been told to "keep doing their exercises" without anyone identifying why those exercises aren't working.
As an FCAMPT-certified physiotherapist, the assessment at MSKrehab includes cervical segmental dysfunction evaluation — identifying specific spinal levels that are mechanically compromised and contributing to symptom persistence. This level of assessment requires advanced manual therapy training that most practitioners, including general physiotherapists, don't have.
Our Clinical Approach
Your first appointment is a comprehensive assessment, not a treatment. We need to understand exactly what is and isn't working before we touch anything.
That means:
-
A detailed history of the accident mechanism, your symptom progression, and everything you've tried
-
Full cervical and thoracic segmental assessment using FCAMPT-level manual examination
-
Strength and range of motion testing interpreted through the lens of your specific findings, not generic norms
-
Identification of nerve irritation patterns using Gunn IMS principles where relevant
-
Outcome measures that give us a baseline we can actually track
From there, treatment is built around what you specifically need — not a protocol. Where passive modalities are used, there is a clinical reason. Where needling is used with Gunn IMS technique, it targets the specific muscle shortening and neuropathic drivers identified in your assessment, not a generic trigger point routine. Where exercise is prescribed, it is sequenced to match your current capacity and progressed deliberately.
McGill Method principles guide our approach to spine rehabilitation — meaning we prioritize building the stability and motor control that lets you actually function, not just temporarily feel better on the table.
Every session includes a reassessment. If something isn't working, we change it.
Your Right to Choose Your Physiotherapist
This is important and most patients don't know it.
After a motor vehicle accident in Alberta, your insurance company does not get to decide who treats you. You have the legal right to choose your own healthcare providers, including your physiotherapist.
Insurance companies often have preferred provider relationships with specific clinics. Those relationships benefit the insurer, not you. If you have been directed to a specific clinic by your adjuster, you are not obligated to go there or stay there.
You can choose MSKrehab. We are experienced with Alberta MVA claims, direct billing, and the documentation requirements that support your file.
What Recovery Actually Looks Like
If you come in early after an accident and engage fully with the process, the realistic goal is return to your pre-accident life — work, sleep, driving, activity — with a clear understanding of how to manage any residual symptoms independently.
If you come in as a second opinion after months of inadequate treatment, the goal is the same, but the path is longer. We will tell you honestly where you are, what the evidence says about your trajectory, and what the most efficient route forward looks like. That may include physiotherapy at MSKrehab, referral for imaging or specialist opinion, or coordination with your adjuster regarding your claim status.
What you will leave your first appointment with is an honest picture of what happened, why you haven't recovered yet, and exactly what needs to happen next.
