Advanced Practice Physiotherapy in Calgary

Advanced Practice Physiotherapists (APPs) are highly trained clinicians with specialized skills in managing complex or persistent conditions. They provide expert assessments, develop advanced treatment plans, and often work in expanded roles that may include ordering imaging, triaging referrals, and collaborating directly with physicians or surgeons. This approach streamlines care, improves outcomes, and offers faster access to the right treatment—especially for post-surgical rehab, spinal conditions, and multi-joint pain.

Advanced Practice Physiotherapy (APP) services in Calgary are ideal for patients with complex musculoskeletal issues, chronic joint pain, post-surgical rehab needs, or spinal conditions requiring in-depth assessment and streamlined care. APPs bring extended clinical training to assess, diagnose, and manage challenging cases with greater efficiency. They may order diagnostic imaging, coordinate with specialists, and develop comprehensive treatment plans. This advanced approach reduces delays, enhances recovery, and ensures timely access to the right care—especially for those navigating multiple or persistent conditions.

Complex musculoskeletal conditions don't always fit neatly into a standard physiotherapy pathway. Sometimes the presentation requires a different level of clinical assessment — one that includes the ability to order imaging, coordinate with specialists, and manage conditions that sit at the intersection of physiotherapy and medicine.

Advanced Practice Physiotherapy (APP) at MSKrehab reflects training as an FCAMPT-certified physiotherapist with expanded clinical scope, working within a care coordination model that integrates directly with referring physicians.

What Advanced Practice Physiotherapy involves:

  • Comprehensive assessment of complex or persistent musculoskeletal conditions that haven't responded to standard care

  • FCAMPT-trained physiotherapy to assess and treat spinal and peripheral joint conditions with a level of diagnostic precision that standard physiotherapy training doesn't provide

  • Clinical reasoning that integrates physiotherapy assessment with medical history, imaging review, and differential diagnosis

  • Ordering and interpreting diagnostic imaging — X-ray, ultrasound, and MRI — where clinically indicated (see diagnostic imaging referrals)

  • Direct communication and written reporting to referring physicians and GPs

  • Coordination with specialists including orthopaedic surgeons, physiatrists, and pain specialists where appropriate

  • Management of patients navigating complex care pathways — MVA rehabilitationchronic pain, post-surgical complications, and multi-system presentations

Who is this for?

Patients with complex or persistent conditions who need more than a standard physiotherapy assessment. Patients referred by GPs or specialists who want detailed clinical documentation and coordinated follow-up. Patients who have seen multiple practitioners without a clear diagnosis or effective treatment plan.

The care coordination model:

MSKrehab operates specifically as a care coordination clinic — not a high-volume treatment facility. Every patient receives a detailed assessment, and referring physicians receive written communication of findings and recommendations. This structure is designed to add clinical value to the referring physician's management of their patient, not to replace it.
