Post-Surgical Rehab in Calgary
We guide your recovery after orthopedic surgery, ensuring a safe and effective return to daily life, work, or sport. Our programs are customized to match your surgical timeline and healing process.
Recovering from surgery? Our post-surgical rehabilitation programs are designed for individuals healing from procedures such as ACL reconstruction, joint replacements, rotator cuff repairs, spinal surgery, and more. We work closely with your surgeon’s protocols to restore strength, mobility, and confidence while minimizing pain and reducing the risk of re-injury. Whether you’re returning to daily activities, sport, or work, we help you recover faster and move better with safe, evidence-based care.
Post-Surgical Rehabilitation in Calgary
Surgery is a beginning, not an endpoint. What happens in the weeks and months after your procedure determines how fully you recover — and how long that recovery lasts.
At MSKrehab, post-surgical rehabilitation is built around your specific surgery, your surgeon's protocol, and your individual presentation. We don't run a generic post-op program. We assess where you actually are in your recovery, what's limiting you, and what the right progression looks like for you specifically.
Surgeries we commonly rehabilitate:
-
ACL reconstruction and other knee ligament repairs
-
Hip and knee joint replacements
-
Rotator cuff repair and shoulder reconstruction
-
Lumbar spinal surgery including discectomy, laminectomy, and fusion
-
Cervical spinal surgery
-
Hip labral repair
-
Shoulder labral repair and stabilization procedures
-
Meniscus repair or meniscectomy
What post-surgical rehabilitation at MSKrehab involves
We work within your surgeon's protocol timeline while tailoring every session to your actual presentation. Post-surgical patients frequently have inhibited muscle activation, movement compensations, and pain patterns that a standard protocol doesn't address. We identify and treat these specifically — using FCAMPT manual therapy for joint mobility and tissue management, Gunn IMS dry needling where nerve-related muscle inhibition is a factor, and progressive exercise prescription built on objective strength measurements.
Communication with your surgical team
MSKrehab operates on a care coordination model. We communicate with your referring surgeon or physician, document your progress, and flag anything that requires re-evaluation. If your recovery isn't tracking as expected, we'll tell you — and we'll help you navigate the appropriate next steps, including requesting follow-up imaging or specialist review through our diagnostic imaging referral and advanced practice physiotherapy services.
When to start
Ideally, as soon as your surgeon clears you for physiotherapy — which for most procedures is within the first week or two post-operatively. Early, appropriately-dosed physiotherapy produces better long-term outcomes than waiting until you feel ready. The earlier we can establish normal movement patterns, the less compensatory movement you're reinforcing.
Sport-Specific & Post-Operative Rehabilitation in Calgary
Returning to sport after surgery isn't just about reaching a time threshold. It's about demonstrating that your body has the capacity to handle the demands of your sport — and having the objective data to back that up.
At MSKrehab, sport-specific post-operative rehabilitation bridges the gap between surgical recovery and full return to sport. We combine evidence-based post-surgical protocols with objective strength and performance testing, sport-specific movement training, and clear criteria-based return-to-sport progressions.
Who this is for?
Athletes recovering from surgeries including ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, hip labral repair, Achilles tendon repair, shoulder stabilization, and other sport-related orthopaedic procedures. Also appropriate for active individuals returning to recreational sport or physically demanding work following surgery.
What makes sport-specific rehab different from standard post-surgical care: Standard post-surgical rehabilitation focuses on restoring baseline function — getting you walking normally, regaining range of motion, returning to daily activities. Sport-specific rehabilitation takes that further: we progressively load you through the movement demands of your specific sport, identify and address asymmetries and compensations before they become re-injury risks, and ensure you meet objective performance benchmarks before returning to training and competition.
The Rehabilitation Process
Working within your surgeon's protocol, we use FCAMPT manual therapy and soft tissue therapy for tissue mobility, Gunn IMS where nerve-related muscle inhibition is limiting activation or strength development, and progressive exercise prescription built on objective strength measurements. Return-to-sport milestones are based on criteria — limb symmetry indices, sport-specific movement quality, and load tolerance — not calendar dates alone.
Communication with your surgical team
We document your progress and communicate with your surgeon throughout your rehabilitation. If your recovery is not progressing as expected, we will identify that early and coordinate appropriate follow-up.
